The 2,500-year-old city of Kariz is located at a depth of 16 meters below ground on Iran’s Persian Gulf Island of Kish.
Encompassing an area of 10,000 square meters, the city was formerly an ancient underground canal and now is a tourist destination of the coral island. The height of the city is eight meters with its ceilings covered by shells and coral.
The soil obtained from Kariz during its restoration enjoys various medicinal benefits and can be used in ‘mud therapy’.
