‘The Skier’ grabs award in Tanzania

Iranian feature film ‘The Skier’ was awarded at the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) in Tanzania.

Directed by Fereidoun Najafi and produced by Mohammad Ahmadi, the 2018 film received the Silver Dhow award as part of the competition for the Long Features Fiction section of the event.

‘The Skier’ is the story of a young boy in an Iranian village who decides to save a goat from being sacrificed as part of a traditional ceremony prior to his ski match later that afternoon, facing many obstacles along the way.

Najafi’s film highlights vanishing tribal traditions as he portrays the lives of the ethnic Bakhtiari people in Iran’s southwestern region.

The film has so far received various nominations and awards at domestic and international film festivals including the Best Feature Film award at the 21st Olympia International Film Festival in Greece.

ZIFF is the largest multi disciplinary art and cultural festival in East Africa dedicated to the exhibition of films, music, and panorama.

Each year ZIFF exhibits more than 150 films made in Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Latin America, the US, and Asia.

The festival’s closing ceremony was held July 14, 2019.
