Seoul to head to Iranian ‘The Crypt’

Iranian feature ‘The Crypt’ has been scheduled to go on screen at the 2019 edition of the Seoul International Film Festival (SIFF) in South Korea.

Made by Vahid Zarrabinasab, ‘The Crypt’ is about the ancient tradition of Qanat Bride common in central Iran’s rural regions.

According to the tradition, the elders of a village that is faced with an intense drought decide to perform the tradition of Qanat Bride, in which a virgin girl marries Qanat.

The Qanat bride rinses herself with qanat water every week till it gets fertile. But she has to remain unmarried to the end of her life.

Qanat is a gently sloping underground channel to transport water from an aquifer or water well to the surface for drinking and irrigation.

‘The Crypt’ stars Shaqayeq Farahani, Pouria Poursorkh, Kaveh Khodashenas, Khosrow Shahraz, Samira Hosseini, Mehdi Mayamay, Hossein Tousheh, Mehri Ale-Aqa, and Leila Sarmadi.

The title has so far attended a number of film festivals in different countries, including Spain and Brazil.

The Iranian flick will compete with titles from the US, the UK, South Africa, Japan, France, Canada, China, Columbia, Spain, Mexico, Bulgaria, and South Korea.

The SIFF is a global celebration of films and filmmaking in the heart of South Korea.

This edition of the SIFF will take place on September 20-26, 2019.
