Paris event to meet Iranian ‘Sonita’

Iranian documentary ‘Sonita’ has been scheduled to go on screen at the 15th edition of the Panorama of Maghreb and Middle Eastern Cinemas in France.

Directed by Rokhsareh Qaem-Maqami, the acclaimed and award-winning documentary ‘Sonita’ is about an Afghan female rapper and refugee in Tehran who has to overcome many hardships to accomplish her dreams.

The film was premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the festival’s World Documentary Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award.

‘Sonita’ was also nominated in the Best Documentary category of Film Independent Spirit Awards at the 2017 LA Film Festival in the US.

The Iranian female filmmaker Qaem-Maqami studied filmmaking and animation in Tehran Art University. She has made 6 documentaries and won more than 20 international awards.

The Panorama of Maghreb and Middle Eastern Cinemas, held in Paris and Seine-Saint-Denis will allow spectators to discover movies from Iran, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Mauritania, Egypt, Palestine and Lebanon.

The event includes screenings, meetings with directors and professionals, round tables, concerts and many other festive proposals.

The 15th edition of the event is slated for March 3-21, 2020.
