‘Sunless Shadows’ to go to Germany

The Munich International Documentary Film Festival in Germany has picked Iran award-winning documentary ‘Sunless Shadows’ for its 2020 official selection.

 Mehrdad Oskouee’s documentary feature film will be attending the international competition section of the 35th edition of the German fest.

The doc narrates the story of five young women who are jailed in a small juvenile detention center for murder.

Through breathtaking monologues, the women clarify the circumstances of the murders and even their motives.

‘Sunless Shadows’ was named as the opening film of the 2019 International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in the Netherlands which was the film’s first international appearance where it won the festival's best director award.

The 74-minute documentary has also gone on screen at some global events, including the 60th Krakow Film Festival in Poland, the 19th DocPoint - Helsinki Documentary Film Festival in Finland, the 16th ZagrebDox, the Int’l Documentary Film Festival in Croatia, the 18th Geneva Int’l Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH), the 12th Millennium Festival in Belgium and the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the US.

Latest award bagged by ‘Sunless Shadows’ include the Special Jury Award from the 17th Big Sky International Film Festival in the US.

‘Whisper of Paper Pieces’ by Behzad Na’albandi and Morteza Shabani’s ‘Copper Notes of a Dream’ will be also vying at the event as Iranian representatives.

According to the official website of the event, the Munich International Documentary Film Festival holds yearly and accepts and screens over 150 works. The selected pieces show people from different walks of life. 

The 35th round of the event is playing host to 121 films from 42 countries.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, this year edition of the festival will hold online on May 06-24, 2020.
