Iranian screenplay becomes US fest finalist

Iranian short film screenplay ‘Salamoon’ has become finalist at the 2020 Nashville Film Festival (NaFF) in the US.

The screenplay of ‘Salamoon’ written by Ashkan Chavoshi is shortlisted among the 2020 Screenwriting Competition Quarterfinalists of the 51st NashFilm which is one of the first film festivals in the United States.

Chavoshi’s screenplay was selected as finalist from among thousands of entries in 2020. Winners will be announced during a virtual ceremony this Fall.

‘Salamoon’ is an adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s story ‘The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World’.

According to the Nashville’s official website, a brief summary of the film comes as, "The waves of sea someday bring the beautiful and huge body of an old sailor called 'Salamoon' to the shore of one of the poor and remote villages in southern Iran. The magical body has a strange feature that attracts fish and women... The men remain confused about the abundance of fish and their women’s infatuation with 'Salamoon'.”

Chavoshi is also the recipient of the Best Screenplay award at the 5th edition of the Mobile Motion Film Festival (MoMo) in Switzerland.

‘Salamoon’ also made the quarterfinalist at the 2020 Screenwriting Master Contest which is an annual screenplay competition based in the US.

Founded in 1969, the NaFF is a cultural event which provides a showcase for the world’s best independent films, featuring more than 200 films a year.

The annual Nashville festival has shifted to a virtual model for this year’s event to follow the health and safety protocols related to the coronavirus. The event will take place on October 1-7, 2020.
