Holy month of Muharram begins

The sacred month of Muharram, month of martyrdom and sacrifice has started.

Muharram is the beginning of the lunar year in which people mourn for Imam Hussain (A.S) who was martyred on this month.

Muharram ceremonies are held to respect Imam Hussein (AS) - the third Shia Imam and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad [PBUH] - who stayed against tyranny almost 1400 years ago.

Muslims hold mourning rituals on the first 10 days of the month of Muharram. The mourning reaches its peak on the day of Ashura –the day of martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his 72 companions in Karbala.

This year’s mourning ceremonies have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic and many groups have announced that they would limit their events to Adhere to health protocols.
