Iran-French film to vie at Albanian fest

Iranian-French short film ‘Subjection’ is selected to screen at the Tirana International Film Festival (TIFF) in Albania.

The 12-minute flick, directed by Alireza Mirzaee, will be competing with 24 films from around the world at the Live Action section of the Albanian fest’s 18th edition.

The films screening at this specific category of the event will have the chance to compete for an award as well as to be selected for the next round of Academy awards, as the fest is Oscar qualifying.

The film is about a man who is taken to the heart of the desert by an armed group. They draw a cell on the sands and dictate him to stay within the drawn lines. “In case, he steps foot outside the cell, he will be killed”, they tell the man. Moments later, when he is left alone, it becomes his decision to choose between freedom and staying in the imaginary cell.

The film has already taken part in a number of global film events, including the In the Palace Int’l Short Film Festival in Bulgaria and the Tehran Int’l Short Film Festival in Iran.

Some other Iranian shorts such as ‘Exam’ by Sonia Haddad and Mehrdad Ranjbar’s ‘Talker’ will also participate in the TIFF.

Established in 2003, the TIFF, which is one of the most significant film festivals in Balkans, is a platform for different cultures to come together and to interact.

The upcoming edition of the festival will be held online due to coronavirus pandemic on September 19-25, 2020.
