Fifth day of Muharram in pictures

Iranian people have marked the fifth day of the holy month of Muharram while strictly observing the health protocols issued by government officials to prevent the new coronavirus from spreading further.

People in Iran have been holding religious ceremonies since the beginning of Muharram, commemorating the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussain (AS).

In 680 AD after standing against the then-tyrant, Umayyad caliph, Yazid I, Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions were martyred in the Battle of Karbala.

Muslims all over the world gather to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of their Imam who is the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Iranians hold rituals for 40 days in mosques and other venues. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the mourning ceremonies are held by the precise observation of health protocols.
