Iran ranks 10th at UNESCO world heritage registration list

Iran has stood at the 10th rank with 24 UNESCO-registered sites, surpassing the United States and Japan.

According to the director of the World Heritage Affairs Office at Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, Iran is ranked 10th regarding the number of historical monuments and sites registered in the UNESCO World Heritage list.   

Before the Islamic Revolution, the UNESCO-listed monuments in Iran were limited to Persepolis, Naghsh-e Jahan Square and Choghaznabil. However, today the number has been increased to 24 historical sites.
