‘Khatemeh’ to head to motherland

Iranian documentary ‘Khatemeh’ is slated to vie at the Herat International Women’s Film Festival (HIWFF) in Afghanistan.

Zarei brothers’ 89-minute joint production will be screened at the sixth edition of the Afghan festival.

Hadi and Mehdi Zarei’s coproduction tells the story of an Afghan girl who unwillingly gets married to her late sister’s husband under the pressure of her family.

The doc features Khatameh's life from the moment she took refuge in the welfare organization's help center to file for divorce.

‘Khatemeh’ is the winner of Best Director for Full-length Documentary and Best Editing awards at the 12th edition of the Cinema Vérité, Iran’s International Documentary Film Festival.

It also competed at the 9th American Documentary and Animation Film Festival (AmDocs) in the US as well as the 2019 Florence Film Awards in Italy.

Known as the most prestigious Women’s Film Festival in the region, HIWFF is an annual event held in Afghanistan with the aim to highlight the power of women in different life situations.
