Cannes winner to go to Cinema Vérité

The 14th edition of the Cinema Vérité, Iran’s major documentary festival, has scheduled to screen ‘The Cordillera of Dreams’, the winner of Golden Eye Award for the best documentary at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival.

Made by the 78-year-old Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzman, the doc is about the past and future of his home country and the aftershocks of Pinochet’s coup d’état.

‘The Cordillera of Dreams’ talks about the 1973 coup carried out by Augusto Pinochet, as well as the repression during the dictatorship.

Guzman left Chile when Pinochet came to power and lived in exile for the past 40 years.

His documentary opens with breathtaking, deceptive, and undeniable beauty of the Andes Mountain ranges as seen from Santiago, the city of his birth.

Contemplative, analytical and troubling, this is a nature film refracted through a historical trauma, a compilation of visual wonders that doubles as an act of remembrance.

It delivers an indelible feature of Chile’s landscape and treats as a gateway into a deep and painful consideration of the country’s recent history.

The 14th Cinema Vérité is also scheduled to screen ‘Kubrick by Kubrick’, a documentary by the French filmmaker Gregory Monro. It is a rare and transcendent journey into the life and films of the legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, featuring a treasure trove of unearthed interview recordings from the master himself.

Earlier, the Cinema Vérité organizers announced that a selection of documentaries praised at 2020 edition of several international events would be reviewed during a special section titled “World’s Best”.

This year, the event has also dedicated a special section to screening documentaries on the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organizers of the festival have received more than 130 submissions on the pandemic in the COVID-19 category.

The top works in this category will be honored at the closing ceremony, while the international section of the festival is non-competitive this year.

The 14th edition of the Cinema Vérité will be held online due to the coronavirus outbreak in December 2020.
