Dhaka fest to host ‘Suddenly a Tree’

Iranian movie ‘Suddenly a Tree’ has been selected to compete at the 19th Dhaka International Film Festival (DIFF) in Bangladesh.

Directed by Safi Yazdanian, the film’s story is set during Iraq-Iran war, when Farhad gets arrested for an illegal attempt to immigrate.

Being released after some years, he decides to go after the love of his life, Mahtab.

The 91-minute film follows Farhad’s life as he talks to his psychiatrist about his childhood and adulthood.

Peyman Maadi, Mahnaz Afshar, Zohreh Abbasi, Siamak Safari, Shaqayeq Dehqan, Mehrab Qasemkhani, Pantea Panahiha, and Arman Moradi are on the cast list of ‘Suddenly a Tree’.

The film was nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Soundtrack at the 37th Fajr Film Festival in Iran.

It has gone on screen at global events such as the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea and the Persian Film Festival in Australia.

The 2021 edition of the DIFF has defined ‘Better Film, Better Audience and Better Society’ as its theme.

The festival’s website states the “DIFF is a bold expression of resistance against the decadence, vulgarity and cheap commercialism that pervades the mainstream Bangladesh film industry”.

The 2021 edition of the event will be held on January 16-24.
