Ayatollah Khamenei’s speech was broadcast on live TV last week when he recommended reading Joel Whitney’s ‘Finks: How the C.I.A. Tricked the World's Best Writers’.
The leader further explained that Whitney’s stylish narrative explores the CIA’s covert Cold War program, through which it created dozens of magazines and corrupted many others already publishing.
The book exposes the corruption of American culture, discourse, and public space in the name of ideology.
In Finks, Whitney details how CIA had colluded with literary magazines to produce cultural propaganda throughout the Cold War, a debate that has never been resolved.
“I was after telling the story of the cultural Cold War not in its typical little academic bin, which completely separates it from history and the political Cold War, the so-called real Cold War, and to restore the idea that they were both happening at the same time,” said Whitney during one of his book tours.
