Iran’s ‘Coup 53’ qualifies for Oscars

Iranian documentary ‘Coup 53’ has been qualified to take part in the 93rd edition of the Academy Awards in the US.

Taqi Amirani’s film is being shown at the academy’s members-only screening room, devoted to the flicks in the Best Documentary Feature category.

This year, the primary selection of the eligible docs has been a total of 200 works, which has set a new record in the history of the Oscars.

Oscar-winning film editor Walter Murch and Amirani have jointly written the scenario for the doc that inspects hidden roots of the 1953 Coup d'état in Iran.

The 2019 doc features the story of Operation Ajax, staged by CIA in Iran to overthrow Iranian prime minister of the time, Mohammad Mosaddeq.

Murch, Amirani, and Ralph Fiennies have appeared in the flick.

The rest of the film’s figures, such as Winston Churchil, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Allen Dulles, have come from the archival footage remaining from the past.

The 93rd edition of the Oscars, which has mostly held in February, is postponed to April 25 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
