Borderlines to screen ‘180 Degree Rule’

The 2021 edition of the Borderlines Film Festival in the UK has been set to host Iranian feature ‘180 Degree Rule’.

Directed by Farnoush Samadi and produced by Ali Mosaffa, ‘180 Degree Rule’ narrates the story of a female school teacher in Tehran who wants to travel to northern Iran to attend a wedding ceremony.

When her husband forbids the trip, she makes a decision that may have grave consequences for her.

“A tragic accident at a family wedding in the mountains north of Tehran sets in train a chain of events that reveal not just the faulty dynamics and mistrust within a single marriage, but the patriarchal constraints that dominate and cripple society as a whole. Through the choices she makes, wife, mother and teacher, Sara, in a mesmerizing performance by Sahar Dolatshahi, ‘crosses the line’, flouting social, moral and legal norms to find herself and her whole family tangled in a web of secrecy and deceit for which the only outlet is silence,” the website of the Borderlines has written.

Sahar Dolatshahi, Pejman Jamshidi, Azita Hajian, and Hassan Pourshirazi are among the cast members of the flick.

‘180 Degree Rule’ has already gone on screen at several global events, including the Fajr Film Festival in Iran, the Tofifest Film festival in Poland, the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada, and the Valladolid International Film Festival (Seminci) in Spain, where it won the best film award at the Meeting Point (for first and second fiction films) section.

Samadi has already made a number of internationally acclaimed short films, including ‘Gaze’, ‘The Silence’, ‘Disappearance’, and ‘More than Two Hours’.

In 2018, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars) selected Samadi as a member.

Started in 2003, the Borderlines is an annual film festival held in multiple locations around the Herefordshire, Shropshire and Powys borders.

The 2021 edition of the fest, to be held online, is slated for March 26-April 11.
