Swiss fest to show Iran doc ‘Coup 53’

The seventh edition of the Iranian Film Festival Zurich (IFFZ) in Switzerland has been slated to host ‘Coup 53’.

Taqi Amirani’s film, a joint production of Iran, the UK and the US, will be screened at the feature and documentary section of the event.

The 2019 doc features the story of Operation Ajax, staged by the CIA in Iran to overthrow Iranian prime minister of the time, Mohammad Mosaddeq.

Oscar-winning film editor Walter Murch and Amirani have jointly written the scenario for the doc that inspects hidden roots of the 1953 Coup d'état in Iran.

Murch, Amirani, and Ralph Fiennies have appeared in the flick.

The rest of the film’s figures, such as Winston Churchil, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Allen Dulles, have come from the archival footages remaining from the past.

‘Coup 53’ was selected as an eligible candidate to run for the Best Picture award at this year’s edition of the Oscars.

The IFFZ aims to fill the cultural gap between Iranians and Swiss as well as the many foreigners living in Switzerland.

The event defines itself as “A Platform for presenting the Iranian culture and tradition and for building a bridge between different cultures by the means of the universal language of art and especially the 7th art, cinema”.

The 7th edition of the event will be held on May 27–June 2, 2021.
