Art of Shirdong weaving in Iran

Shirdong weaving is one of the handicrafts in Iran’s southwestern province of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari.

Shirdong is mainly made of the best kind of wools which is obtained from shearing fleece from living sheep in spring.

Nomadic women turn the wool into thin strings using simple tools and then dye them using natural colors.

The women later begin weaving the Shirdong.

The Bakhtiari people decorate their tents and homes using Shirdong, the colorful and patterned stripes with attached tassels, for their wedding ceremonies and celebrations.

The stripes alone are also used instead of ropes.
