Centuries old ritual of Muharram in Iran

Millions of people all around Iran are preparing to take part in the mourning rituals of the month of Muharram.

The first ten days of the month of Muharram are the time for martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad [PBUH], as well as his loyal companions in the Battle of Karbala.

People in Zarghan city, Fars Province, have a special tradition for setting up the tents (Kheimeh) for Muharram.

Still being performed in the city, the ritual is 500 years old.

Here are some photos showing all people participating in the ritual.
