Iran’s ‘Sonita’ to vie at Georgian fest

The CineDOC-Tbilisi Documentary Film Festival in Georgia has been set to screen Iranian documentary ‘Sonita’.

Directed by Rokhsareh Qaemmaqami, the doc on an Afghan girl will be displayed at the main competition section of the 9th edition of the event.

‘Sonita’ with its feminine story shows the hardships that afghan women at any walks of life have to undergo.

The film shows how Sonita Alizadeh, an Afghan vocalist, is forced by her mother to marry just for the sake of money. If she ties the knot, her family will ask the groom for money so that Sonita’s brother will spend it on his own marriage.

The film has already been screened at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam and received the Jury Award.

Launched in 2013, the CineDOC-Tbilisi is the first international film event in the region that is invested on screening creative documentary movies.

The 2021 edition of the fest is slated for August 15-September 15.
