Iran caravanserai on UNESCO waiting list

Zaferanieh caravanserai, on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) waiting list, has been being examined by the organization’s experts.

Iran and UNESCO’s experts started examining the caravanserai from October 2 and will end the task on October 5.

The result will show the possibility of the caravanserai’s registration on the UNESCO’s List of World Heritage.

Zaferanieh caravanserai’s origin goes back to Seljuk era and it was renovated and restored in the following eras of Timurid, Safavid and Qajar dynasty.

Located in Khorasan, in the village of Zaferanieh, the caravanserai was on the well-known ancient Silk Road.

The caravanserai shows that the origins of the village dates back to some 1,000 years ago.

There are some other historical public places around the caravanserai, including Hammam (traditional public bath), Yakhdan or Yakhchal, and an old castle.
