Ihrami weaving: Persian handicraft

Locals of the southern county of Shushtar in Iran’s Khuzestan Province pursue weaving Ihrami, which is a traditional fabric of Iran.

This fabric is made through textile machinery using cotton or wool yarn. It features simple geometric patterns.

In the past, a kind of Ihram fabric was produced without any pattern as a special outfit of Ihram during the Hajj pilgrimage.

Ihrami fabrics are today weaved in different sizes to make prayer rugs, doormats, bed covers, bags, and similar products.

Ihrami of Khuzestan is different from the Ihram of Iran’s Ilam Province or Harami fabric of Iran’s Yazd in terms of material, pattern, size, and color.

The motifs, color, and design of Ihrami fabrics are not premade and they are created in geometric and symmetrical forms from the memory of the weaver.

The motifs of Ihrami are somehow representative of motifs of potteries from the Susa civilization from hundreds of years ago.

Bright and shiny colors such as red, yellow, blue, green, and white are common in weaving Ihram.
