Iran’s Sanandaj picked as 7th Book Capital

Iranian western city of Sanandaj in Kordestan Province has been selected as Iran’s 7th Book Capital.

According to IRNA, Sanandaj was selected due to the diversity in book-reading programs and special attention to creative cultural activities.

Assigned by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, a team of literati and scholars annually decide on Iran’s Book Capital.

Sanandaj was selected from among over 190 cities applied to participate in the program and submitted their book-reading activities.

This year, Kermanshah Province, with 14 cities, Fars Province, with 13 cities, and Alborz, Mazandaran, Hormuzgan, Khorasan Razavi provinces, with 12 cities each, had the most cities participating in this program.

In 2019, the Iranian city of Sanandaj was designated as city of “Music” in UNESCO Creative Cities program.

Besides Sanandaj, Evaz (in Fars Province), Bam (in Kerman), Semnan (in Semnan Province), and Najaf Abad (in Isfahan Province) were also selected as the creative cities in the field of book-reading.

Ahvaz, Neishabur, Bushehr, Kashan, Yazd, and Shiraz were Iran’s previous book capitals.
