Ravansar in Kermanshah to become archeological center

The city of Ravansar, in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah, has been named as the archeological research center for the cultural landscape of Hawraman/Uramanat, which is a UNESCO-inscribed world heritage site.

According to the provincial officials, despite the tough geographical features of Ravansar, archaeological studies carried out in the area have shown some deeply rooted human settlements.

Known as the gateway to the cultural landscape of Hawraman/Uramanat, Ravansar in the heart of the Zagros Mountains in the provinces of Kordestan and Kermanshah, along the western border of Iran is one of the important archeological zones of the region.

For over half a century, a number of 120 archeological sites have been explored during the excavation projects conducted in the region.

Some of the archeological sites identified in Ravansar include Quri Qala Cave, dating back to the Paleolithic period and Taq-e Shirin and Farhad (arch of Shirin and Farhad) which belongs to the Achaemenid period.

In 2021, the Uramanat (or Hawraman) Cultural Landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the 26th tangible cultural heritage of Iran.

The decision was made owing to Uramanat’s terraced architecture and flawless natural attractions which have granted beauty to this part of the earth.
