Poet Nezami Ganjavi to be commemorated in Iran

Iran is to celebrate the greatest romantic epic Persian poet Nezami Ganjavi in a weeklong program in March, said Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.

The program will kick off on March 12 (Esfand 21 in the Persian calendar year), which is annually celebrated by Iran as Nezami Day.

This year’s program is set up to be held for one week as a hybrid event with virtual and live meetings.

The commemoration of Nezami is a cultural move, away from any political attitude, to introduce Nezami as an Iranian and Persian-language poet.

Nezami Ganjavi, who is erroneously called Nezami an Azerbaijani poet, lived during the 12th and early 13th centuries. His masterpieces have been composed entirely in Persian, without even a verse in the Azerbaijani language.

Ganjavi is mostly known for ‘Khamseh’, which was inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register list in 2011.
