Museums are where past meets present and people are presented with numerous still alive or dead cultures and concepts.

The value of the objects held in these places is for the history and the stories behind them and for the secrets that they unfold.

Obviously knowing our past leads us to a better understanding of ourselves, of who we are and where we are going to.

Following is a list of Tehran’s main museums open to visitors from around the world:

 

Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art

The museum holds thousands of modern and contemporary arts of Iran and world-class paintings, prints, drawings and pictures.

Moreover the architecture of the museum’s building reminds the visitors of Iran’s traditional architecture.

Besides the works of Iranian famous artists, visitors can enjoy invaluable artworks of world-known artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso, and Jackson Pollock.

 

National Museum of Iran

National Museum of Iran, the biggest, the oldest and the most important museum of the country, is home to precious items from different eras.

The museum presents rare items from ancient Iran and the Islamic era.

There are items from Old Stone Age to the end of Sassanid era and also the art of the Islamic era.

Glassware and Ceramic Museum of Iran

The museum holds precious glassworks from different historical eras, and the mesmerizing beauty of the items doesn’t leave visitors’ memory for a lifetime.

Moreover, the building of the museum is superb; it has been private residence of Prime Minister Ahmad Qavam and was later home to Embassy of Egypt.

 

Treasury of National Jewels

Considered as one of the world’s famous collections of diamond, Iran’s Treasury of National Jewels stores and exhibits Iran’s national jewels.

The famous Daryaye-Noor diamond is kept in this museum. Iranian kings have always had treasures of gold and jewelry, but it was from Safavid era that collecting and purchasing jewelry started.

 

Reza Abbasi museum

Reza Abbasi museum hosts a precious collection of objects available to visitors.

Opened in 1977, the museum has different halls displaying Persian miniature, calligraphy, as well as Islamic and pre-Islamic works.

Registration Museum

The Registration Museum keeps memoirs of Iranian elite, the monument of which, was built during Qajar era as the Organization of Registration.

In 1918, Iran has registered the first ID card for a woman named Fatemeh Irani; and it was the beginning of giving credited identity to Iranians.

Malek Museum

Malek Museum has been one of the amazing places to visit and feel the grandeur of Iranian art and history.

The museum was inaugurated in 1997 and currently contains hundreds of manuscripts, thousands of books as well as other historical items such as coins, stamps, carpets, and paintings.

Iran Historical Car Museum

The Iran Historical Car Museum is one of the largest and most valuable car collections in the region, comprising sports cars, limousines, motorcycles and carriages.

Located on Tehran-Karaj Special Road, the cars on display belong to the Qajar and Pahlavi eras.

Time Museum

Iran’s Time Museum has been popular among the enthusiasts of not only antique watches and clocks, but also the lovers of Iranian architecture and stucco work.

The museum is Iran’s first museum of its kind. The complex encompasses an area of 5000 square meters with a two-floor building of 700 square meters.

The 80-year-old building with its appealing surrounding is one of the best places to visit in Tehran.

Carpet Museum

The Carpet Museum of Iran is occupying a site of about 12,000 square meters.

Inaugurated in 1978, the museum’s exhibited items include carpets from the 15th century to the present day.

Moqaddam House and Museum

The historical Moqaddam House and Museum in Tehran is one of the great places for tourists to get familiar with Iranian antiques.

Belonged to Moqaddam family, the house dates back to late Qajjar era. The family were among the high rank officials of the Qajar era.
