Filmfest Dresden honors ‘Orthodontics’

Iranian short flick ‘Orthodontics’ has received a special jury mention at the 2022 edition of the Filmfest Dresden, International Short Film Festival in Germany.

The organizers of the German festival announced on Sunday the Iranian film won the special mention in the Golden Horseman Short Film International Competition judged by a jury consisting of Mariana Hristova, John Canciani and Martina Scarpelli.

“This film stood out among the titles in competition: It’s awkward, it’s surreal, it’s imaginative, it’s original, it’s colorful, and yet dark at the same time,” the jury said in its statement.

Directed by Mohammad-Reza Meiqani, ‘Orthodontics’ focuses on the life of a teenager and the way her appearance influences her relationship with her friends, family, and society.

It tells the story of Amitis, a teenage girl who has always had to wear orthodontic headgear and is under pressure because of her orthodontic treatment. She suddenly does a strange thing to her friend Sarah.

Maryam Hosseini, Yas Farkhondeh, Arezou Ali, Mehdi Sadr and Yasamin Ebrahimi are the actors of the film.

The short flick has previously participated in the Sundance Film Festival in the US, the Leeds International Film Festival in the UK, the Curtocircuito International Film Festival in Spain, the Short Films Competition at the Cannes Film Festival in France, and the International Short Film Week Regensburg in Germany.

According to the official website of the festival, “Filmfest Dresden was founded in 1989, the short film festival focuses on short film in all its facets, and has become one of the most important festivals of its kind throughout Germany.”

The 34th edition of the German festival was held on April 5-10, 2022.
