Muharram preparations summit in Hamedan

As Iranian people prepare for holding the rituals of the month of Muharram to mourn the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), a grand summit on Muharram congregations has been held in Hamedan.

The meeting that is themed on being a servant of the third Shia Imam was hosted at the Imam Khomeini Husseiniya (a mosque in the city of Hamedan).

Various traditions related to this month were rehearsed at the event.

Muharram is the first month in the Islamic calendar within which the grandson of Prophet Muhammad [PBUH] and his loyal companions were martyred after standing against the then-tyrant Yazid in the Battle of Karbala.

During the first ten days of Muharram, flocks of mourners gather in mosques or take it to the streets to observe this month related rituals. The ceremonies continue till the 40th day after the martyrdom (known as Arbaeen).

Ta'zieh (passion play), which is a dramatic presentation of events leading to and following Imam Hussein’s martyrdom, is one of such rituals observed during the ceremonies.

The distribution of Nazri (votive food) is another ritual in this month.
