Did you know that the world's oldest prosthetic eye has been discovered in Iran’s Zabol.
This prosthetic eye dating back to over 4800 years ago and found in Iran’s Burnt City is the oldest in history.
Located near the city of Zabol, Shahr-i Sokhta, otherwise known as 'Burnt City' in Persian, is located at the junction of Bronze Age trade routes crossing the Iranian plateau.
The fake eye in a skeleton belonging to a woman was made from tar and animal fat and painted gold.
Experts note that whoever designed the eye must have had a good grasp of ocular anatomy with the tiniest blood vessels recreated using golden wires.
Initial anthropological studies on the remaining skeleton of the woman revealed that she was of mixed race and died some 4800 years ago between the ages of 25 to 30.
A number of clay vessels, ornamental beads, a leather sack, and a bronze mirror have also been found in the grave of this woman.
