Karaftu cave, Iran ancient apt. bldg.

Karaftu cave in the Iranian province of Kurdestan with carved caverns has the appearance of a multi-story apartment building.

The 2,000-year-old cave resembles an apartment the tenants of which left long ago and so have the landlords!

The natural-historical complex of Karaftoo cave has been shortlisted for World Heritage status by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

According to Iran's tentative list published by the UNESCO website, "The site comprises two sections: a natural part, and a carved portion with troglodytic architecture.

"The troglodytic part includes" four stories with "nested rooms, corridors, and stairs, carved in stone, to connect the floors," it adds.

Karaftu is regarded as one of the largest rock-cut caves in Iran.
