Iran’s doc ‘Subtotals’ to vie at Clermont filmfest

Iranian documentary ‘Subtotals’ is scheduled to be screened at the 35th Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France.

‘Subtotals’, an experimental documentary co-produced by Iran, Poland and Germany, will present Iran along with animated film ‘Our Photo Memento’ at the 2023 edition of the France film event.

Directed by Mohammad-Reza Farzad, ‘Subtotals’ is a poetic essay meticulously constructed from clips of Iranian 8mm home videos from bygone days.

The film was inspired by the eponymous short story by Gregory Burnham and Édouard Levé’s novel, ‘Autoportrait’.

The flick was previously screened at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in the Netherlands.

This year’s festival will bring together the worlds of filmmakers of all stripes in the selections of 70 programs.

“Between the competitions and retrospectives, there are 400 hundred films from fifty countries that offer a formidable dive into a refreshing pool of young cinematic talent,” according to the event’s official website.

The festival began in 1979 as part of a student film club organized by Clermont-Ferrand University. It was renamed the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival and became competitive later.

The upcoming edition of the festival will be held from January 27 to February 4 in the central French city.
