Mourning rites: Distribution of votive food

Iranian Muslims mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the third Shia Imam, make and distribute Nazri (votive) food as part of Ashura rituals during the Islamic lunar calendar month of Muharram.

The distribution of Nazri (free food) by benefactors is one of various rituals to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and 72 of his companions in the Battle of Karbala.

Ashura is the climax of 10-day mourning ceremonies observed in Muharram. The ceremonies symbolize humanity's struggle against tyranny and oppression.

Popular stews such as Gheymeh, mainly made of beef and split pea, and Ghormeh Sabzi, a herb, beans and meat stew, as well as thick soups such as Ash Reshteh are among the most popular dishes distributed in Muharram.

Some people also serve free tea and desserts.
