UNESCO has recognized 54 historical Iranian caravanserais as world heritage sites.
The recognition was made at the 45th edition of UNESCO World Heritage Committee in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, after the organization reviewed 56 caravanserais in 26 Iranian provinces.
In a statement, the representatives of many countries, including Oman, Nigeria and India, threw their support behind the registration of 54 Iranian caravanserais.
Two of the listed caravanserais were removed from the approved caravanserais.
Rasoul Vatandoust the representative of Iran's cultural heritage present at the UNESCO meeting told the media that Iran suggested only 56 caravanserais, despite having over 700 of them nationally registered.
In a file related to "Iranian caravanserais" in UNESCO, it is emphasized that "caravanserais are among the most important forms of Iranian architecture that caused the development of routes and needs related to the demands and requirements of traveling”.
Iran has so far registered 26 historical and natural monuments in UNESCO.
