Majidi wins Fajr morality award

Iran-India joint production ‘Beyond the Clouds’ at helm of famed Iranian director Majid Majidi grabs morality award at Fajr 2018 ending ceremony.

The closing ceremony for 36th Fajr International Film Festival was held Thursday with Indo-Iranian film ‘Beyond the Clouds’ winning Muhammad Al-Ameen Award for morality and religious values.

Launched in 2016 edition of Fajr International Film Festival, the award is dedicated to the winner whose works reflect prophetic ethics and morality.

The movie is Majidi’s latest project after his blockbuster ‘Muhammad: The Messenger of God’.

Set in the slums of Mumbai in India, Majidi’s melodrama is the tale of a wild kid who deals drugs and crisscrosses with his motorbike across the city to make the next drop.

He reunites with his estranged sister, Taara, in time to become her lifeline after she is being jailed for attempted murder while defending herself.

Talking about his experience of working with an Indian cast and crew, Majidi said “This is the first feature film I have made outside Iran, and it's an experience I have been waiting for years to happen. ‘Beyond The Clouds’ is an extension of my cinematic beliefs, the roots of which lie in human values, love, friendship and family bonding.”

Established in 1982, the FIff celebrates cultural exchange, displays creative achievements of highly acclaimed cineastes and pays tribute to local and international films.

Since its establishment, the Fajr International Film Festival has played a vital role in the development of Iranian Cinema.

Supervised by Iran’s Ministry of Culture, the festival hosts veteran directors and new filmmakers from Iran and across the world every year.

The festival came to an end on Thursday, April 26, 2018 in Tehran.
