A portrait of Iranian sound designer Mohsen Roshan

Read on to know more about Iran's master of sound design Mohsen Roshan.

Mohsen Roshan, born in 1949 in Tehran, is a distinguished sound designer in Iranian cinema and television.

Renowned for his exceptional talent in sound design, Roshan is the recipient of three Crystal Simorgh awards.

His impressive portfolio includes acclaimed works such as ‘The Glass Agency’, ‘Purple Color’, ‘The Immigrant’, ‘The Scout’, ‘Canaan’, ‘Snowman’, ‘Guardianship of Love’, ‘The Red Soil’, ‘Shahriyar’ and ‘Lizard’.

Several works featuring Roshan's expert sound design have been screened and warmly welcomed by the iFilm English audience. Notable among these are ‘Passing through the Hardships’, ‘The Survivor’, ‘Sheida’, ‘A Passenger to Rey’ and ‘Imam Ali (AS)’.

Roshan began his professional journey in the cinema industry in 1988 as a sound designer for the film ‘The Scout’, directed by Ebrahim Hatamikia.

Although this early work did not achieve the same level of success as his later projects like ‘Lizard’, it was a significant step in his career. During this period, he collaborated with notable artists including Mehrdad Soleimani, Alireza Heydari, Qolamreza Aliakbari, and Asghar Porhajrian.

One of the highlights of Roshan's career was his work on the movie ‘Lizard’ in 2002.

His exceptional sound design in this film helped him establish a significant presence in the cinema world.

Collaborating with professional actors such as Parviz Parastouee, Sirous Hemmati, Shahrokh Foroutanian, and Rana Azadivar, Roshan elevated the quality of his work to new heights.

The year 2003 marked a pivotal period for Roshan, during which he worked on several major productions.

He contributed as a sound designer to four important movies: ‘The Silent King’, ‘The Steps’, ‘Equation’, and ‘Hayam’. This year solidified his reputation in the artistic community.

Throughout his career, Roshan has received numerous accolades. His notable awards include:

- Crystal Simorgh at the 8th Fajr Film Festival for ‘The Scout’ by Ebrahim Hatamikia

- Crystal Simorgh at the 9th Fajr Film Festival for ‘The Glass Eye’ by Hossein Qasemi-Jami

- Jury Prize at the 10th Fajr Film Festival for ‘Once upon a Time, Cinema’ directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf

- Crystal Simorgh at the 11th Fajr Film Festival for ‘On the Wings of Angels’ by Javad Shamaqdari

- First Prize at the Resistance International Film Festival for ‘Union of the Good’ by Ebrahim Hatamikia

- Golden Statue at the 14th Iranian House of Cinema for ‘The Child and the Angel’ by Masoud Naqashzadeh
