A portrait of Iranian sound designer Jahangir Mirshekari

Read on to know more about Iran's master of sound design Jahangir Mirshekari.

Jahangir Mirshekari, born on July 29, 1947, is a distinguished sound designer and recordist in the Iranian film industry.

Over the years, Mirshekari has become one of the most celebrated figures in his field, having won the Crystal Simorgh award for best sound at the Fajr Film Festival five times—a record that underscores his talent and contribution to Iranian cinema.

Mirshekari began his professional career in television, with one of his earliest significant works being the 1985 series ‘Amir Kabir’, directed by Saeed Nikpour.

Although this project did not achieve the same level of acclaim as some of his later works, it marked a crucial step in his career, allowing him to collaborate with notable artists like Saeed Nikpour, Fakhri Khorvash, Mohammad Motee, and Iraj Rad.

The year 2003 was particularly productive for Mirshekari, as he worked on several major films that solidified his reputation in the industry.

Among his notable projects that year were ‘The Moocher’ directed by Farzad Motamen, ‘Ace’ and ‘Fever’, both as a sound recordist, ‘Meeting Leila’ as a sound designer, and ‘Mom’s Guests’, where his sound recording skills earned him widespread recognition.

In addition to ‘Mom’s Guests’, Mirshekari’s collaboration in 2014 with director Ida Panahandeh on the film ‘Nahid’ further showed his versatility.

While Mirshekari is best known for his work as a sound recordist, his talents extend beyond this field. He has also been involved in sound design and occasionally in acting.

His sound design credits include films such as ‘The Curse’, ‘Nothing’, ‘The Insider’, ‘A Time to Love’, ‘Crime’, ‘The Age’, ‘The Intruder’, ‘From the Heart’, ‘The Unfinished Piece’, ‘Born Under Libra’, ‘Maturity’, ‘How Much for You to Cry?’ and ‘Mr. Governor’.

As an actor, Mirshekari has appeared in films like ‘Italy Italy’, ‘Taj Mahal’, ‘The Intruder’, and ‘The Pear Tree’.

Throughout his career, Mirshekari has garnered numerous accolades. He won his first Crystal Simorgh for best sound in 1997 for ‘Born Under Libra’, directed by Ahmadreza Darvish, at the 18th Fajr Film Festival.

He also won the award for ‘Under the Roofs of the City’ at the 8th Fajr Film Festival. His other notable nominations include the 1987 film ‘The Nights of Zayandeh Rood’, directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, the 1986 classic ‘Where Is the Friend's House?’ directed by Abbas Kiarostami, and ‘The Tenants’ by Darioush Mehrjouee, also in 1986.

In 2000, Mirshekari was nominated for the Crystal Simorgh for his work on ‘Killing Mad Dogs’ directed by Bahram Beyzaie. His other nominations include ‘The Actor’ by Mohsen Makhmalbaf in 1993, ‘The Sun of Tomorrow’ by Ahmad-Reza Darvish in 1996, and ‘Abadani-ha’ by Kianoush Ayyari in 1993.

With his unmatched record of five Crystal Simorghs and numerous nominations, Jahangir Mirshekari remains a towering figure in the Iranian film industry, celebrated for his mastery in sound recording and his enduring impact on the art of cinema.

iFilm English website wishes him many more years of success and creativity in his career.
