Portrait of sound designer Abnar

Parviz Abnar, born on July 19, 1958, in Ahvaz, is a renowned Iranian sound designer celebrated for his contributions to cinema and television.

Abnar's journey in sound recording began after he graduated from the Academy of Cinema and Television in 1978.

He started his career in television the same year, working on news, documentaries, and fiction films.

One of his early notable works was the 1986 film ‘Rapport’. Over the years, he has become a pivotal figure in Iranian cinema, contributing to various TV series such as ‘Raana’ in 1988.

Abnar’s skill has earned him multiple accolades, particularly at the Fajr International Film Festival.

He received the Crystal Simorgh for best sound recording for ‘Across the Fire’ (1986), directed by Kianoush Ayyari, ‘The Last Action’ (1990), directed by Varouzh Karim-Masihi, and ‘Narges’ (1991), directed by Rakhshan Bani-Etemad.

In 2015, he won another Crystal Simorgh at the 35th Fajr International Film Festival for his work on the film ‘Ferrari’.

Abnar's filmography is extensive and diverse. Some of his prominent works include ‘The Little Bird of Happiness’ (1987), ‘A Man and a Bear’ (1989), ‘The Girl by the Pond’ (1991), ‘The Blue-Veiled’ (1994), ‘The Miracle of Laughter’ (1996), ‘The Girl in the Sneakers’ (1998), ‘Two Women’ (1999),‘Smell of Camphor, Fragrance of Jasmine’ (2000) and ‘The Light Nights’ (2003).

He also provided sound design for ‘No Men Allowed’, ‘A Lunatic Fled the Cage’, and the TV series ‘Awakening’, all of which have been broadcast on iFilm English TV.

Abnar's expertise and dedication to sound recording have left a lasting impact on Iranian cinema. His work not only enhances the auditory experience of films but also helps in conveying the emotional and narrative depth of the stories.

With 13 nominations for the Simorgh award during the Fajr Film Festival, his contributions are both recognized and celebrated.
